Product Details
What is TuffTrak?
TuffTrak is an ultra heavy duty temporary ground protection mat manufactured from high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Each panel measures 3.0m × 2.5m (7.5m² coverage) and is engineered to support loads of up to 150 tonnes, making it one of the highest load-rated temporary access systems available on the market.
The system is used to create temporary access roads, work platforms, crane pads and staging areas on ground that would otherwise be unsuitable for heavy plant, vehicle movements or site operations. TuffTrak distributes load across its HDPE surface to protect the ground beneath, and can be removed without lasting damage to the site after project completion.
TuffTrak Key Features & Technical Benefits
- 150 tonne load capacity – suitable for cranes, excavators, HGVs and the heaviest construction plant
- HDPE construction – no scrap metal value, significantly lower theft risk than aluminium systems
- Lighter weight than aluminium – lower transportation, handling and logistics costs
- Chemically inert – suitable for contaminated ground, heritage sites and environmentally protected areas
- Electrically non-conductive – safe for deployment near power lines, substations and live electrical infrastructure
- Chevron surface pattern – provides maximum traction, disperses mud and prevents slippage in wet and dry conditions
- Multiple connection options – panels interlock to create continuous road surfaces and platforms of any dimensions
- Suitable for vehicle and foot traffic – versatile across all temporary access and work platform applications
- Fully reusable – durable HDPE construction withstands repeated deployment and recovery cycles
- Hire available – contact us for a quote
Applications

Frequently Asked Questions
What is TuffTrak?
TuffTrak is an ultra heavy duty temporary ground protection mat manufactured from high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Each panel measures 3.0m × 2.5m and supports loads of up to 150 tonnes. It is used to create temporary access roads, crane pads, work platforms and staging areas on soft, waterlogged or sensitive ground across construction, oil and gas, events and remote project site applications.
How much weight can TuffTrak support?
TuffTrak supports loads of up to 150 tonnes, making it suitable for the heaviest construction plant, mobile cranes, excavators and HGVs. It is one of the highest load-rated temporary ground protection systems available. Load capacity is subject to ground conditions — contact our technical team for project-specific guidance.
Why choose TuffTrak over aluminium ground protection mats?
TuffTrak offers several advantages over aluminium mats. Its HDPE construction carries no scrap metal value, making it significantly less vulnerable to theft on unmanned and remote sites. TuffTrak is also lighter, reducing transportation costs; chemically inert, making it safe on sensitive and contaminated sites; and non-conductive, making it suitable near live electrical infrastructure where aluminium mats present a risk.
Is TuffTrak suitable for use on environmentally sensitive or heritage sites?
Yes. TuffTrak’s chemical inertness makes it one of the preferred ground protection systems for environmentally sensitive sites, protected habitats, brownfield land and heritage sites where ground contamination or surface damage must be avoided. The system protects the ground surface during operations and is recovered without lasting impact after use.
Can TuffTrak be used near power lines or electrical infrastructure?
Yes. TuffTrak is electrically non-conductive, making it safe for deployment near overhead power lines, underground cables, substations and live electrical equipment. This is a particularly important advantage on wind farm developments, grid connection sites, utility works and any application where an aluminium mat would present an electrical conductivity risk.
What is the difference between TuffTrak and MegaMat?
TuffTrak and MegaMat are both heavy duty HDPE ground protection systems in the same product range, sharing the same material specification, load capacity and performance characteristics. The key difference is panel size — MegaMat is available in a larger format for applications where a bigger mat footprint is more practical. Contact The Floor Box for details on MegaMat sizing and pricing.
Is TuffTrak available to hire?
Yes. TuffTrak is available to hire from £4.50 ex VAT per m² per week. Hire includes delivery and collection — off-loading and re-loading is required (forklift access needed), and insurance while the product is in your possession is required. An optional installation service is available. Complete the hire enquiry form on this page or contact us directly for a quotation.
What ground types is TuffTrak suitable for?
TuffTrak is suitable for all ground types including soft turf, soil, sand, mud, gravel, concrete and contaminated ground. The HDPE mat distributes load across its surface to minimise ground pressure and protect the surface beneath. It is particularly effective on waterlogged, soft or unstable ground where unprotected vehicle movements would cause rutting, compaction or surface damage.
