Ground Protection Mats for Construction, Utilities & Access

Ground protection mats create safe, stable working surfaces and vehicle access routes on ground that would otherwise be unsuitable for plant, machinery or foot traffic. Whether you need to protect a grass verge during utility works, create temporary hard-standing for a construction site or establish vehicle access across soft or contaminated ground, the right mat system keeps your operation moving and leaves the surface beneath undamaged when you're done. The Box Group supplies ground protection mats across the full load range - from lightweight PPCP panels for pedestrian access and light vehicle use through to heavy duty aluminium and HDPE mats rated for loaded HGVs, tracked plant and outrigger loads up to 150 tonnes. All systems are reusable, stack and transport efficiently, and deploy without specialist equipment. Available to buy outright or hire, with a buy-back scheme on purchased panels.

Ground Protection Mat Applications

Ground protection mats are specified wherever plant, vehicles or personnel need to access, work on or cross ground that cannot support the load or cannot afford to be damaged. Our systems are used across construction, civil engineering, utilities, energy, events and emergency response.

Construction Site Access & Hard-Standing

Create temporary hard-standing areas and vehicle access routes on construction sites where ground conditions are unsuitable for direct plant movement. Ground protection mats distribute the load of loaded HGVs, concrete trucks, cranes and tracked plant to prevent ground failure and rutting. Heavy duty HDPE systems such as TuffTrak and EuroMat® are rated for the heaviest construction plant and can be relocated and reused across a project as access requirements change.

Utilities & Infrastructure Works

Protect grass verges, footpaths, public spaces and soft ground during gas, water, electricity and telecoms infrastructure works. Ground protection mats create firm vehicle and pedestrian access routes over sensitive ground, prevent topsoil compaction and allow reinstatement without ground damage claims. Lightweight HDPE systems are non-conductive, making them suitable for use near live electrical infrastructure.

Crane Outrigger Pads & Load Spreading

Provide stable, load-bearing platforms under crane outriggers, jack legs and equipment base plates on soft or uneven ground. Heavy duty HDPE ground protection mats distribute point loads across a wider surface area, preventing outrigger sinkage and ensuring crane stability on ground that would otherwise require excavation and concrete preparation. TuffTrak panels rated to 150 tonnes are specified for the heaviest lifting operations.

Renewables, Oil & Gas Site Access

Establish temporary access roads and working platforms at renewable energy construction sites, wind turbine installations and oil and gas infrastructure projects on soft or remote ground. Ground protection mats create trafficable roads across farmland, moorland and wetland environments, allowing project completion without permanent land damage and facilitating required site reinstatement.

Outdoor Events & Festival Hard-Standing

Create temporary hard-standing for event vehicles, generators, catering units, production trucks and emergency service access at outdoor events and festivals. Ground protection mats are lighter and faster to deploy than trackway panels, making them the practical choice for defined hard-standing pads, generator bases and equipment platforms at events where full trackway roads are not required.

Emergency & Humanitarian Access

Deploy ground protection mats rapidly to create emergency vehicle access routes and working platforms in response to flooding, ground collapse or infrastructure failure. Lightweight HDPE panels can be deployed quickly by small teams without plant support, making them suitable for emergency access operations where speed of deployment is critical. The Box Group has direct experience supplying ground protection solutions for humanitarian and emergency response operations internationally

Ground Protection Mats — Frequently Asked Questions

What are ground protection mats?

Ground protection mats are reusable, interlocking panels made from HDPE plastic or aluminium that are laid on the ground surface to create temporary hard-standing areas, vehicle access routes and pedestrian walkways. They distribute the load of vehicles, plant and machinery across a larger surface area, preventing compaction, rutting and ground damage beneath. Used across construction, utilities, events and emergency response, they are deployed without permanent ground alteration and removed cleanly when no longer needed.

What is the difference between ground protection mats and trackway?

Ground protection mats are typically individual panels used to create hard-standing areas, working platforms or short access routes — they are specified for defined areas where plant or vehicles will operate in a fixed location or across relatively short distances. Trackway refers to panel systems specifically designed to create longer-distance vehicle road surfaces rated for repeated loaded passes over extended lengths. For longer access roads, I-Trac composite trackway or AmP Panel aluminium trackway is the correct specification. For platforms, hard-standing and shorter routes, ground protection mats such as TuffTrak, EuroMat® or Lodax Premium are the practical choice. Contact The Box Group for guidance on the right system for your project.

How much weight can ground protection mats support?

Load capacity varies significantly by product. TuffTrak HDPE panels are rated to 150 tonnes, making them suitable for the heaviest crane outrigger and tracked plant applications. EuroMat® and Lodax Premium are heavy duty HDPE systems suitable for loaded HGVs and construction plant — confirm specific load ratings from product datasheets or contact our team. Lightweight systems such as Supa-Trac Lite and Stadia X Lite are rated for pedestrian use and light vehicles only. Always specify the system against your heaviest expected load, not average load.

Are HDPE ground protection mats better than aluminium?

Both materials have distinct advantages depending on the application. HDPE mats such as TuffTrak and EuroMat® are chemically inert, non-conductive, have no scrap metal value (reducing theft risk on site), and are lighter per panel than aluminium at equivalent sizes. They perform well as hard-standing platforms and shorter access routes. Aluminium trackway such as the AmP Panel offers superior performance on longer access roads and in demanding multi-pass vehicle routing where the rigidity of aluminium better resists repeated deflection. For most construction and event hard-standing applications, HDPE is the preferred specification. For heavy haul roads, aluminium trackway is typically the right choice.

Can ground protection mats be used on contaminated ground?

Yes — HDPE ground protection mats are chemically inert and impermeable, making them suitable for use on contaminated ground where direct contact between vehicles and soil must be avoided. They can also help contain surface contamination by creating a barrier between traffic and the ground. Aluminium systems are equally suitable for contaminated ground. If contamination is a specific concern on your project, contact our team to confirm the right system and any additional precautions.

How are ground protection mats installed?

Most ground protection mats require no specialist equipment or tools to install. Panels are laid sequentially on the prepared ground surface and connected using the manufacturer's interlocking system — typically by overlapping, pinning or locking adjacent panels. TuffTrak and EuroMat® panels are manhandable but their size and weight means a small team and a mechanical handler is typically faster for large coverage areas. Lightweight systems such as Supa-Trac Lite and Stadia X Lite can be installed entirely by hand by one or two operatives. Contact us for project-specific installation guidance

Are ground protection mats available to hire?

Yes. Ground protection mats from The Box Group are available to hire as well as to purchase outright. A buy-back scheme is also available on purchased panels, making outright purchase a viable investment for contractors and companies with ongoing access requirements across multiple sites or projects. Contact us with your project dates, site dimensions and load requirements for a hire quotation or purchase recommendation.

What ground conditions are ground protection mats suitable for?

Ground protection mats are suitable for a wide range of ground conditions including soft soil, clay, grass, gravel, sand, waterlogged ground and uneven terrain. They are not a substitute for proper ground investigation on sites where ground bearing capacity is a safety-critical concern — the mat system distributes load but cannot compensate for severely unstable or collapsed ground. Contact our technical team with your ground conditions and load requirements for a specification recommendation.
